Dermatological Society of Singapore

The Dermatological Society of Singapore was established at an inaugural meeting held on 21 June 1972 at Brunel Hawes Lecture Theatre, Medical Unit II, Outram Road General Hospital, Singapore. There were 12 founder members present including Drs B Wach, Lawrence Leong, Oon Beng Bee, K Rajagopalan, Khoo Oon Teik, V S Rajan, Goh Yong Siah, Tay Chong Hai, Tulip Tan, George Wong, Lim Chan Yong and Loke Khua Eu. Professor Khoo Oon Teik was the founding President of the society.

The origin of the Society dates back to 1960 when a group of 19 doctors founded the Singapore Dermatological Society under the umbrella of the Singapore Medical Association. The name of the Society was changed to Dermatological Society of Singapore when it became an independent Society.

The objectives of the Society

To advance the knowledge and practice of dermatology;
To promote research in dermatology;
To promote regional and international co-operation in dermatology;
To acquire and publish literature and scientific works;
To organise clinical meetings, seminars, conventions and all such acts and things incidental or subsidiary to all or any of the above.

Activities of the society

The society’s major role is in the continuing medical education of medical practitioners in the field of dermatology.

Monthly meetings: clinical meetings, seminars and talks.
Annual scientific meeting. The first meeting was held on 19 May 1985.
Organisation of regional conferences of dermatology. The first regional conference was held in Singapore from 7 – 9 May 1974. The conference is held every 2 years and 5 countries in the region take turns to host it.
The first regional conference of the International Union against Venereal Diseases and the Treponematoses (IUVDT) (South East Asian and Western Pacific branch) was held in Singapore from 6 – 9 January 1977.

DSS Neutrogena Scholarship
The Dermatology Society of Singapore (DSS) is dedicated to promoting the highest quality of dermatologic care through continuing medical education and research. The DSS is proud to announce that through a generous contribution by Johnson & Johnson Pte Ltd Singapore, DSS has created a scholarship called the Neutrogena-DSS Scholarship Program for Dermatology Trainees. The program was established to promote education of dermatology trainees by providing an education grant for them to attend the Annual Academy of Dermatology Meeting.

The following criteria have been established for the scholarship application:

1. All dermatology trainees can apply for the grant.
2. Priority will be given to advanced trainees who will be presenting papers or posters at the meeting.
3. Other criteria for selection will include contributions to the Society. For example, giving talks or presenting papers at DSS meetings and attendance at DSS events.
4. All applicants shall not receive more than ONE award during his/her traineeship period.
5. All additional funds applied for/received by the applicants of the Education Grant must be disclosed on the application form and any funds subsequently received must be disclosed.

The Society will open applications for the Education Grant six months before the Annual AAD Meeting, and close applications 4 months before the AAD meeting. Applicants will be notified of the results of their application within 4 weeks after the closing date. DSS EXCO will review all applicants and select the beneficiaries of the education grant based on the criteria stated above.

Dermatological Society of Singapore (DSS) Book Prize
This yearly prize was started in 1974 to award the final year medical student with the best score in the dermatology examination.

V S Rajan Gold Medal
This award is presented in memory of the late Professor V S Rajan after his death in 1983. It is awarded to the final year medical student with outstanding results in the dermatology examination conducted by the National University of Singapore. The student with the second highest score will be awarded the DSS Book Prize instead.

V S Rajan Memorial Fund
This was set up in August 1983 to honour and commemorate the late Professor V S Rajan who had contributed greatly to the advancement of dermatology and venereology in Singapore. Professor Rajan was the President of the Dermatological Society of Singapore from 1977 to 1979. The fund provides grants for members of the medical and allied professions to conduct research in the field of dermatology.
